Since 2006, small graph paper drawings have been an essential facet of linn meyer's studio practice. They serve as a means of introspection and a visual language that she continues to refine, embracing the tension between systems and improvisation. These works have, at times, functioned as a starting point for larger paintings or installations, but they are also autonomous works—simple meditations on the underlying structures that shape our world.

Designed to be a tactile experience, This Drawing is Not a Sketch reveals the intricacy of the marks and the material qualities of the works through one-to-one-scale reproductions. In many cases, both sides of the drawings are included, as the marks on one side of the paper subtly assert themselves in the composition on the opposite side. 

In both its structure and scale, this volume evokes the intimacy of a sketchbook—notes, fragments of poetry, and other artifacts from the artist’s studio intersperse with the drawings. This Drawing is Not a Sketch also includes a supplementary booklet that features a conversation with the artist in which she talks about both her process and the way the graph paper drawings exist within her larger artistic practice.
