The Who: Concert Memories from the Classic Years, 1964 to 1976

Autor Edoardo Genzolini Contribuţii de Jeremy Goodwin
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 18 dec 2022
I feel that it is likely to gain widespread attention for its psychological bent on Pete Townshend who was pursuing something different from the pack. The focus is as much on the process of creativity as it is the end result. I have been listening to and studying The Who since I was 15 when I developed an unbridled passion for them to the point where I felt driven to explore their relevance to music history more formally. This led me to investigate historical archives through which I met some very interesting people gaining access to material never before published. Some of the information gathered and the evidence for it is thus to be published in a new context for the first time in fifty years. I am proud of the intimate window this work opens into the mind of one of the most interesting and influential musicians and composers in history. My impressions garnered from this research found validation in meeting the person who became my editor as well as a contributor to this work, Jeremy Goodwin. He is an academic neurologist in America who has close ties to Pete Townshend. Jeremy knows Pete Townshend personally. He and his family socialized in some of the same circles as Pete and he was able to verify many of those key impressions offering other and quite personal examples of them. Our intense and fruitful cooperation revealed itself particularly successful when we shared the book’s content with Pete Townshend himself. In a recent letter to Jeremy, Pete remarked, “Edoardo’s book looks wonderful. The photographs are very special. His take on The Who, and on me, is intriguing and extremely insightful. I wasn’t always a pleasant person to be around in the early days. It’s good to see that sometimes I managed to do some decent things for fans. I am very pleased to see this wonderful book published in English”. He has given me written permission to use these lines inside the book. You will find them in the beginning of the attached sampling.

Comentariile autorului

  • Offers a completely new, unusual, and, as Pete Townshend himself stated, “intriguing and extremely insightful” perspective on the Who and on himself.
  • The reader will be thrown into a cultural and musical portrait of the sixties and seventies perceived through the Who’s untold stories and unseen photos.
  • The message this book wants to deliver is that an archivistic and philological approach to the Who’s work, through anecdotes and newly surfaced films and photographs, can help clarify misinformation that has become myth and legend, as well as correct information that has been published time and time again. Did all that has been written and said of the Who really happen that way? Yes and no. The reader, and especially die-hard fans, will relish a new perspective.
  • Presents for the first time the only existing photos of bassist John Entwistle smashing his bass on stage
  • Covers live performances up through their last tour with original drummer Keith Moon in 1976
