Cine a citit The Seawomen de Chloe Timms va recunoaște aici tema comunității insulare guvernate de reguli stricte și frica ancestrală de mare, însă Sophie Mackintosh distinge lucrarea sa printr-un stil mult mai abstract și o tensiune psihologică difuză, aproape insesizabilă la început. Spre deosebire de abordarea mai tradițională din The Wicked Deep, unde blestemul și răzbunarea sunt explicite, aici răul este ambiguu, strecurându-se în conștiința cititorului odată cu apariția celor trei străini pe țărm. Reținem modul în care autoarea construiește o atmosferă de „frumusețe crudă”, unde dorința și distrugerea devin inseparabile. Această preocupare pentru controlul asupra corpului feminin și limitele libertății este o constantă în opera autoarei, fiind reluată și rafinată în Blue Ticket. Ritmul lecturii este unul lent, hipnotic, care nu oferă răspunsuri ușoare, ci ne lasă să plutim într-o stare de alertă permanentă, așteptând inevitabilul colaps al acestui paradis artificial.

Sophie Mackintosh won the 2016 White Review Short Story Prize and the 2016 Virago/Stylist Short Story competition, and has been published in Granta magazine and TANK magazine among others. The Water Cure is her first novel.
