The Tutorial Algebra (Advanced Course) - Based on the Algebra of Radhakrishnan

Autor William Briggs
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 25 iun 2012
The advanced half of the University Tutorial Series algebra, written in 1898 for candidates facing the examinations of the University of London, and still a patient teacher. William Briggs (1861-1932) and the mathematician G. H. Bryan, a Fellow of the Royal Society, wrote the tutorial series that carried external students through the Intermediate and degree examinations of London. The Tutorial Algebra came out in two parts, and this is the second: the advanced course, published by W. B. Clive in 1898 and built on the plan of Professor Radhakrishnan's algebra, which its authors credited as a careful study of the best English authorities. The advanced course picks up where the elementary volume stops, working through the convergence and summation of series, continuity and the elementary functions, complex quantities, finite differences, determinants, elimination, and the theory of equations. Each result is reached by example rather than asserted, and later reviewers of the series kept returning to the same praise: clear writing and close attention to detail. That is what makes it usable by a reader with nobody to ask. This edition features:The second, advanced volume of The Tutorial Algebra, first published by W. B. Clive in 1898 Written for candidates sitting the Intermediate and degree examinations of the University of London Covers the convergence and summation of series, complex quantities, determinants, and the theory of equations Worked examples throughout, in the plain, unhurried style for which the tutorial series was known A record of how mathematics was taught and examined in the late nineteenth century

Notă biografică

William Briggs first became involved in the socialist movement in 1971. His time as a communist, as a Marxist-Leninist has spanned many decades. They have been years of struggle, of setbacks, of betrayals. He grew and developed in the movement alongside many fine men and women whose selflessness and commitment inspired him and inspire him still. In the early 1980s he joined the Socialist Party of Australia, since re-badged as the Communist Party of Australia. He served the Party as a journalist, both in Sydney and for three years in the Soviet Union. He is the last Australian communist to have lived and worked in Moscow. This book is both a personal reflection of life as a Marxist and an observation of the history of the communist movement in Australia since the early 1970s.
