Evidence over Ideology: Thomas Sowell's Intellectual Legacy
Economist and social theorist Thomas Sowell has shaped how millions think about markets, culture, and public policy through bestselling books, syndicated columns, and viral videos that have reached new generations.
This collection brings together leading scholars--Steven Pinker, Condoleezza Rice, Niall Ferguson, John H. Cochrane, Glenn C. Loury, Roland G. Fryer Jr., and others--to honor Sowell's extraordinary career spanning six decades and more than 40 books.
These essays don't just celebrate--they extend and challenge Sowell's ideas with fresh research and contemporary analysis, applying his core insights to today's most pressing questions:
Culture and Economics: Glenn C. Loury and Roland G. Fryer Jr. explore how cultural forces shape economic outcomes, testing Sowell's claims about the relationships between norms, institutions, and inequality. Migration and Ethnicity: Nancy Qian follows Sowell's tracks to analyze how immigrant communities develop economically, examining cultural transmission across generations. Developing Economies: Paola Sapienza applies Sowell's framework to contemporary challenges in Vietnam and other developing nations, examining state-owned enterprises, industrial policy, and the knowledge problem in centralized planning. Education and Human Development: Eric A. Hanushek and Margaret E. Raymond apply Sowell's framework to debates about school choice, charter schools, and what drives student achievement. Knowledge and Public Policy: Steven Pinker and others examine the limits of expertise and how incentive structures shape decision-making in government and institutions. Late-Talking Children: Stephen Camarata examines how Sowell challenged medical orthodoxy through personal research on bright children who talk late, questioning expert consensus even beyond economics.Sowell has made an impact by following evidence wherever it leads--regardless of inconvenient truths. This volume shows why his analytical approach remains essential to policy professionals, scholars, and anyone questioning conventional wisdom about inequality, education, and government intervention.
