Sirāj al-Dīn al-Sakkākī was a rhetorician and court magician born in Khwarazm in 1160 CE (555 H). He was also the author of an Arabic grimoire titled Kitāb al-Shāmil wa-baḥr al-kāmil (The Book of the Complete). These essays explore the content and context of his grimoire from the perspective of a wide variety of disciplines and methodological approaches. They are divided according to four general themes: 1. Sakkākī’s historical context, 2: The relationship of his grimoire to magic books from other cultures and religions, 3. The relationship of his grimoire to other texts in Arabic, and 4. Experimental and creative approaches to The Book of the Complete and other magical texts.

Notă biografică

Emily Selove (PhD 2012, UCLA) is an Associate Professor of Medieval Arabic Literature at the University of Exeter. Her research focuses on magic and the trickster figure in the medieval Middle East.

Geoff Humble (PhD 2018, Birmingham) is an independent scholar focusing on narrative historiography and strange tales in and around the Mongol Empire.
