A book on reality oriented mathematics and its relation to physics which delves into the increasing mathematization of the physical sciences while they simultaneously move farther and farther from application. It attempts to explain this paradoxical situation in terms of the ancient Greek notion of hubris and contrasts the present physical sciences' world view with that of Sir Issac Newton, whose humility is best known from his assertion that if he has seen farther than others, it is because he has stood on the shoulders of giants. Finally, in a post script, it considers the fact that the 'standard model' has not been completely overthrown even though so many talented and brilliant physicists have long been sure that it is quite incorrect.
