Twenty-two years after an alien virus ravaged The Nation of Steel, unrest is brewing. Every day protests are occurring against the Nation's dictatorial and secretive government, Defense. Sixteen-year-old Alaska Donnel, the daughter of a Defense officer, is more worried about the strange, ghostly apparitions that seem to haunt her everywhere she goes until the growing rebellion violently enters her life. Along with fifteen-year-old orphan Ianto Ambrose, she is forced to choose sides. As Alaska fights to save the people she loves, she realizes her ghosts may hold the key to a dark secret buried in her past and the past of the Nation itself.
