Recenzii
Iris Berent has written a remarkable book about a stubborn illusion that is central to our humanity-the sense that our minds are somehow separate from our bodies. The Mind Delusion is bold, lucid, funny, and humane, drawing on philosophy, neuroscience, and psychology to explore consciousness, emotion, AI, and the self. Dualism may be false, but Berent persuasively argues that it is natural, powerful, and perhaps indispensable. This is a serious contribution to our understanding of the mind, and a delight to read.
Iris Berent writes with clarity and verve, contrasting our intuitions about subjective experience with hard psychological data. The Mind Delusion makes a compelling case that cherished assumptions about the mind-body problem reflect a shared cognitive illusion, grounded in evolution and development. Philosophers, take note!
Drawing on cutting-edge psychology and neuroscience, Iris Berent shows how the dualist delusion arises from evolved brain systems and how it produces psychological benefits as well as intellectual and social harms. Well-argued, clear, and personal-this book is essential reading if you want to understand why we are gripped by the mind delusion and how we can live well with it.
Dualism-the belief in an ethereal mind separate from body-is scientific claptrap, yet pervasive throughout our lives. Iris Berent's The Mind Delusion is a deep dive into why that way of thinking, ungrounded in actual biology, exists, and why it is so damaging to things like science and medicine, yet remarkably hard for virtually everyone to resist. If you like poking at the limits of human cognition, and want to sharpen your own thinking, read this book.
Original, elegant, and provocative: The Mind Delusion by Iris Berent demonstrates that our belief in an immaterial mind is a natural byproduct of how the brain works. Ambitious and deeply insightful, this book transforms a timeless philosophical puzzle into a groundbreaking scientific story.
