What if you could read inside the mind of your child's killer? On April 19, 1973-Holy Thursday-seven-year-old brownie scout, Joan D'Alessandro said, "Goodbye Mommy" as she skipped down the steps to deliver Girl Scout cookies to a neighbor. Her mother didn't know it would be the last time she would see her joyful child alive. Joan's body was found three days later, on Easter Sunday, in the mountains of Harriman State Park, New York. The killer was a 27-year-old chemistry teacher who lived on the corner, just three houses away. The crime stunned the suburban community of Hillsdale, New Jersey and the entire nation. Society's awareness of child safety changed overnight. Many years later an unimaginable turn of events took place. A stranger appeared at a Joan Angela D'Alessandro Foundation yard sale carrying a box. Inside were 332 letters that revealed the chilling inner workings of a mind completely devoid of remorse. In this unprecedented true crime memoir, Rosemarie D'Alessandro does three things no one has done before.
First, she gives readers direct access to the killer's own words-showing how a predator thinks, manipulates, and justifies.
Second, she reveals her parallel story-a mother fighting an unjust system. While the killer schemes with his lawyer to get out of prison, she's getting laws passed to protect children in three states and at the federal level.
>You will discover:
- How the author warded off the assaults of family members while advocating for children's and victims' rights, and dealing with a chronic health condition called MG
- What the "white butterfly" represents, and why it became a symbol of hope
>This book is not just about the killer's letters-it's a testament to resilience, a mother's love, and her belief that something hopeful would come out of horrendous tragedy. This story proves that one voice, persistent and unbreakable, can transform a nation's approach to protecting children. The letters reveal the darkness. The mother reveals what darkness cannot destroy-the enduring power of a child's light.
