Nick's parents purchased an old Thames sailing barge. It was an unusual choice of a home in a time when new houses were in demand after Second World War. Nick was lucky to be brought up on board, moving school as the barge moved from port to port on the Medway and Thames. The barge was overhauled by Nick's parents, but the children helped too.
