Long ago lions roamed not only in Africa but throughout the Middle East and into southern Asia. Today, there are only a handful of lions left on the Asian continent, mostly in zoos, but only a couple of centuries ago there were many, many more. The lions were numerous, fierce, and ruled the African continent; but in Asia it was the tiger that was supreme.
