The Lizard Song was the author's attempt in his early twenties to write New Zealand's darkest and most intensely bizarre piece of crime fiction. He may just have succeeded. He describes this novella as Kiwi Gothic and says the most surprising thing about it is that it was written before he'd discovered the diabolical delights of Jim Thompson and Charles Willeford.
