Autorul continuă explorarea temei „detectivului bun într-un regim corupt”, o constantă în opera sa, dar aici miza psihologică este dublată de o vulnerabilitate emoțională rară pentru Gunther. Nu este doar un roman polițist istoric; este un studiu despre trădare și agende ascunse într-o lume în care instinctul de a nu avea încredere în nimeni este singura armă eficientă.
