I got into Information Technology by happy accident. Through a love of science fiction I decided to become an astronomer. Radio astronomy was the growing field at the time so I got a degree in electronics engineering. Through that convoluted set of circumstances called life I ended up in IT. Little did I know when I started that I was really entering a career that would enable science fiction to become science fact. In my career I have gone from the mechanical typewriter and human stenographer to voice dictation via a smart phone. My car full of large paper maps has transitioned to a GPS-based navigation system. The room-sized computer programmed with punch cards has been replaced with a hand-held device with orders of magnitude more power and apps that can be instantly downloaded for free or next to free. It has been a thrilling ride However, I know that the ride will just get better for those climbing on board today. My wish for you is that you will enjoy it as much as I have. But more than that, I also hope that you will be nurtured by a new breed of technology leaders who will guide you down a tactical path to strategic targets filled with new capabilities that will excite you and bring a better world to everyone
