What happens when the life you knew no longer looks the same?
For fifteen years, Ali Orchard built a life around the identities she thought would tell her who she was: wife, mother, daughter, partner, friend.
Then those identities began to shift.
The In-Between is a raw and intimate memoir about what happens in the space between the life you had and the life you don't yet know how to build.
Moving through marriage, motherhood, sexuality, grief, friendship, desire, relationships and the consequences of her own choices, Ali writes without pretending she got everything right. She examines the moments she stayed, the moments she left, the people she hurt, the ways she abandoned herself, and what happened when she finally began asking questions she could no longer avoid.
Who am I now?
What belongs to me - and what have I been carrying for other people?
What happens when love and belonging are no longer the same thing?
How do I trust myself again?
And perhaps the hardest question of all:
What if I don't know yet?
This isn't a memoir written from the other side with all the answers neatly resolved.
It's written from the middle.
From the kitchen floor. From the choices we wish we'd made differently. From the relationships that change us. From the strange, uncomfortable space where an old version of ourselves no longer fits and the next hasn't fully arrived.
It is a story about accountability without self-punishment, vulnerability without perfection, and the courage to look at your own life without looking away.
But The In-Between is also an invitation.
Because sometimes telling the truth about our own experience gives somebody else permission to recognise theirs.
Ali went first.
Can you sit with her?
