The Home Tree traces one woman's search for home across both inner and outer landscapes. Woven with nature, folklore, and encounters with magic and mystery, it follows the wild callings that persist beneath the noise of modern life - and the discovery of what becomes possible when you trust your own longing.
As a little girl growing up in a grey city, Lucy Lowes Paget dreams of colour, beauty, and a deeper connection to the natural world. One day, while fishing by the River Thames, a flock of jewel-toned parakeets flashes across the sky, shattering the ordinary, and awakening a question that will shape her life: can Lucy's own path be as vivid and untamed as those birds?
Adulthood draws her onto a more conventional path, carrying her further from the wild beauty she once imagined. But still, the call echoes in her heart. Guided by unexpected encounters, moments of wonder, and mentors both real and mythical, she begins to follow the thread of a different story.
Lucy's journey takes her across oceans and through the difficult lessons of love, loss, and self-discovery, until at last she puts down new roots beneath the vast canopy of a Guanacaste tree she comes to call home.
Part nature memoir, part mythic quest, The Home Tree is a lyrical and inspiring exploration of what happens when we learn to trust the deeper currents shaping our lives.
Lucy Lowes Paget lives at Apothefinca, the off-grid farm she created in southern Nicaragua. She spends her days tending the land and welcoming people to write beneath the Home Tree. Her work explores belonging, creativity, and our relationship with the living world.
