The Hardening: The Trump Chronicles, cartea 3

Autor Jim Vincent
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 4 aug 2026
The Hardening is the third volume of The Trump Chronicles, a week-by-week documentary record of the second Trump administration, written from the outside-American vantage of Brisbane, Australia.
Across the seventy-seven days from June 21 to September 5, 2025, it traces the moment a presidency stops issuing reversible orders and begins setting its actions into permanent form - pressed into statute, poured into infrastructure, normalized into standing conditions. It opens on the night American aircraft struck three nuclear sites in Iran without a vote in Congress; moves through the signing of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and a multi-billion-dollar detention build-out, the federal takeover of Washington's police, and the government's turn toward taking equity in private firms; and closes on the order directing the Department of Defense to answer also to the name Department of War - a name retired three generations earlier, restored in use before the law allowed it.
In a clinical, restrained voice that lets the facts accumulate - and that is disciplined enough to state the administration's strongest arguments in their own terms - the volume turns a blur of headlines into an anatomy of how executive power acquires permanence. Every consequential claim is sourced to the public record; a chronology, a glossary of mechanisms, and a full citation apparatus close the book.
Rigorous, unsparing, and unusually principled, The Hardening is an account of the interval in which the exceptional becomes routine - a usable reference for citizens, scholars, journalists, and historians who need to follow the federal record without polemic or omission.

Notă biografică

Jim Vincent is an American writer based in Brisbane, Australia. Born and raised in the United States, where he lived for fifty years before moving abroad more than two decades ago, he writes about American democracy from the position of an American observer outside it. His children and grandchildren remain in the United States, which he still calls home. His writing combines the structural distance of an outside observer with the personal stake of an American whose family remains in the United States. The result is work focused not on partisan commentary but on the conditions, mechanisms, and trajectories of American constitutional government. His written work documents the present condition and possible restoration of American democracy. The American Renewal trilogy - American Renewal: A Manifesto for Resistance, A Blueprint for Restoration, And a Vision for Redemption; American Restoration: Rebuilding the Foundations of Democracy; and American Redemption: A Government of the People, by the People, for the People - sets out the strategic and historical case for democratic restoration. The Democracy Clock and its two companion Event Log volumes record and assess governance actions across the first year of the second Trump administration. Essays on Tyranny: Resisting Trump's Attack on Democracy collects shorter analytical work on the same subject. Earlier books include Every Day: Turning Betrayal Into Recovery and The Quiet Habit of Giving: Love, Loss and Repair. The Trump Chronicles is a continuing week-by-week documentary record of the second Trump administration, written for the full length of the term. Each volume covers a contiguous eight-week period in granular detail, from inauguration forward. New volumes appear on a continuing basis through the administration's tenure. The series is intended as a usable reference for citizens, scholars, journalists, and historians who need to follow the federal record without polemic or omission.Vincent is the founder of the independent publication Jim Vincent US, which addresses resisting authoritarianism and rebuilding democratic power. His writing appears at jimvincentus.substack.com. He publishes under his own imprint, Vincent Press.
