The Flying Scotsman is probably the most famous railway locomotive in the world. It's also the popular name for the most important daytime service between London and Edinburgh on the East Coast mainline.

Bob Gwynne outlines the history of this great train and its namesake locomotive, from the instigation of the '10 a.m.' in 1862, through the glamorous years of non-stop running in the 1930s, to the introduction of diesel and electric services that slashed journey times. He also examines the influence of Sir Nigel Gresley on locomotive design, and his legacy that lives on in the form of the preserved Flying Scotsman at the National Railway Museum.

This superbly illustrated book celebrates the much-loved locomotive, the train that shared its name, the route it took, and how it captured the imagination of the nation.
