Notă biografică

Marcus Aurelius was Roman Emperor between 161 and 180 AD. He was a leading practitioner of the Stoic philosophy. During his reign, he defeated the rise of the Parthian Empire in the east and put down rebellions by the Germanic tribes. His personal life was simple and contented after his marriage to the Emperor Hadrian's daughter in 145 AD, and he was able to devote much of his time to his scholarly work.

Lucius Annaeus Seneca the Younger (4 BCE-CE 65) was a influential Stoic philosopher, statesman and dramatist of ancient Rome. His writings constitute one of the most important bodies of primary material for ancient Stoicism. He was killed by forced suicide due to alleged complicity in a plot to assassinate Emperor Nero, of which he may have been innocent.

Epictetus (c. 50-c. 135 CE) was born into slavery in Phrygia (then part of Greece, now in Western Turkey). With the approval of his Roman master, he gained an education and was later given his freedom after Nero died. Arrian was his most famous pupil and he promoted the words of Epictetus after his death.
