It is a novel set in 1946, on a northeast Oklahoma farm. Joe, a precocious seven year old, his grandparents, and three of their daughters, Joe's aunts, face the daily hardship of farming without electricity. They inevitably collide with unseen unscrupulous antagonists driven by greed to take advantage of the coming of electric power. It is a struggle between good and evil, a struggle to the death.
