Genius, Mae Walden begin college at the age of fourteen and law school at the age of eighteen. She resides in the duplex while she attends law school in Berkeley, California. Her neighbor, forty-two year old Ann, becomes Mae's unlikely best friend. As the story opens, Ann experiences a traumatic event across from the duplex. The two women support each other through life's unique challenges.
