Drug shipments out of Central and South America were a common and rapidly increasing event along I-15 in Southern Utah. Cartel captains of Central and South America, such as Pablo Escobar, in Colombia, along with drug lords in cities of central and eastern U.S., were raking in millions of dollars. Little was being done to stop the flow of narcotics through Utah's Dixie until UHP Trooper Barney Jeppson, an eight-year veteran of the U.S. Marines and relatively new to the locale, brought with him the drive and expertise to generate an impressive arrest record. Other troopers, veteran Dan Wilde and the youthful Aaron Gentry became eager to learn from Barney. Despite differing opinions among UHP brass, up north, the three officers became increasingly effective.
