A poignant narrative poem exploring identity, social change, and the complexities of choice in 1980s Ireland. In Martina Evans's The Coming Thing, Imelda navigates the punk scene of Cork City while grappling with personal and societal expectations. As computers transform data and lives, Imelda faces a life-altering decision: an abortion in a Brixton clinic.
This evocative poem delves into the duplicity surrounding ideas about the sanctity of life and the clash between economic progress and traditional Irish values. For readers of Irish poetry and coming-of-age stories, The Coming Thing offers a compelling exploration of identity, relationships, and the search for meaning in a rapidly changing world.
