Structura narativă ne aruncă direct în haosul de după ciumă, alternând între logica rece a unui lord nepregătit și teroarea viscerală a satului medieval. Moartea Neagră a șters ierarhiile. Oswald de Lacy este acum Lord de Somershill, dar titlul este o povară sângeroasă. Tatăl și frații lui au pierit. Sătenii sunt puțini, epuizați, revoltați. Reținem tensiunea insuportabilă: un prunc este găsit ucis în mărăcini. Oamenii urlă despre o creatură gigantică pe cer. „Pasărea Măcelar” a revenit. Simțim cum rațiunea lui Oswald se clatină sub presiunea unei mame ambițioase și a unei surori autoritare. Credem că S D Sykes reușește aici o atmosferă mult mai densă decât în volumul anterior. Ca și Plague Land, volumul de față explorează fragilitatea ordinii sociale după dezastru, dar dintr-o perspectivă mult mai întunecată, unde mitul și realitatea se ciocnesc brutal. Dacă în City of Masks autorul muta decorul în Veneția, aici ne întoarcem în noroiul din Kent, unde pericolul este domestic și imediat. Ritmul este alert. Propozițiile sunt tăioase. Nu există timp pentru răbdare când cadavrele se adună. Recomandăm acest volum pentru felul în care demontează superstițiile prin ochii unui protagonist care încearcă cu disperare să rămână ancorat în fapte, chiar și când cerul pare să se prăbușească peste moșia sa.

There's a nice, cliché-free sharpness to Sykes' writing . . . that suggests a medieval Raymond Chandler at work, and there are no phony celebrations of the peasantry or earth-mothers thrusting herbal concoctions down grateful throats. Plenty of action and interesting characters, without intervention of the libertarian modern conscience that so often wrecks the medieval historical novel.
