The Boy from Boyanup: MWJ Books
Autor George Claude Chapmanen Limba Engleză Paperback – 9 oct 2026
From a childhood shaped by hardship in the small Western Australian town of Boyanup to a remarkable career at the forefront of Australian and international broadcasting, George Chapman's life is a story of determination, reinvention and adventure.
After the early death of his father, George left school at fourteen and entered the workforce with few qualifications but an abundance of curiosity and ambition. His early experiences included working as a telephone switchboard operator, performing as the stage hypnotist and mentalist "Jahn," and joining Perth radio station 6PM as a control room operator..
That modest beginning launched a career spanning more than six decades of extraordinary change in radio, television and communications. George became an announcer and program manager at 6KY, joined Sydney's influential radio station 2UE, and later moved into senior television management roles with Channel 7 in Melbourne and Sydney.
As General Manager of TCN Channel 9 during the Packer era, he worked alongside some of the most powerful, talented and demanding personalities in Australian media. His responsibilities placed him at the centre of major programs, significant news events and the intense pressures of managing a leading commercial television station.
Returning to Western Australia, George became the founding Managing Director of 96FM, Perth's first commercial FM radio station. Launched on 8 August 1980, 96FM achieved exceptional early success and helped transform the city's radio landscape.
George's career later expanded across Asia. From Hong Kong to Malaysia, Indonesia, India and China, he played senior roles in the development of radio, television, satellite and multimedia ventures. These assignments brought new challenges, lasting friendships and a deeper understanding of the cultures and business practices of the region.
Along the way, George encountered broadcasters, entertainers, politicians, business leaders and unforgettable characters. He also pursued his passion for aviation, flying his own aircraft and travelling widely throughout Australia and the world.
The Boy from Boyanup: My Wonderful Journey is not simply the record of a successful media career. It is a deeply personal account of family, loss, opportunity, friendship, resilience and the willingness to begin again.
Told with warmth, honesty and humour, the memoir also captures the extraordinary evolution of broadcasting-from the golden age of radio and the arrival of television to FM radio, satellite communications and the digital era.
Featuring five colour photographic galleries, this premium edition is both an inspiring life story and a valuable personal record of Australian broadcasting history.
