n the 1960s, the adversaries of the border guards were much the same as they are today: public apathy, inept management, political obstruction, Communist agitation, the growing corporate globalist movement, negligent prosecutors and courts. There was also the infamous "revolving door" that required the guardians of the nation's borders to daily release dangerous criminals without fingerprinting or otherwise identifying them. Newcomer from Laredo, Rodney Capers, knew the futility of his border guard job and was not surprised to find a contagion of cynicism in El Paso, but he did not expect to find himself assigned to a group of mavericks who made their own rules of engagement. After a year on the team called the SLIBs, and an injury by an escaping cat burglar, he too had become callous, cynical and zealously dedicated to settling an old score with the burglar--until a girl with a strange Aztec name challenged his self-image.
