The Birchwood shows the pain of love lost and the inner monologue of a man who is grief-stricken. Through the darkest tunnels of pain, one finds out a lot about themselves, and this short story brings up many of the plaguing problems surrounding death, pain and relationships. M. Ryan evokes many emotions throughout this novel, and guides us through this story with the gentlest hands.
