THE ALCHEMIST'S MANUSCRIPT of the Travels of the Merchant of Yemen and His Servant in the Erythrean Sea as Related to the Alchemist of Gozo, the Younger, is a tale of adventure that takes the sailors from Morocco to Palermo, Mecca, Zanzibar, Yemen, Cochin, Singapore, Shanghai, Nagasaki and back to Kerala in India. They rescue a princess and her German lover in Zanzibar, take a shipment of opium to Shanghai, survive attacks by pirates in the South China Sea and the imperial warships in the South Indian Ocean and experience the gay destinations at the seaports. A homosexual relationship between the Merchant and the Servant is alluded to.The story is written in the style of the travelogues of the medieval voyagers to the East.
