The book provides details on the characteristics of cementitious materials and their effects on the rate of heat evolution as well as the effects of elevated curing temperatures on the physical, mechanical and durability properties of concrete. Several case studies are presented to illustrate the important aspects in the design and construction of temperature-sensitive concrete structures.

Notă biografică
Yunus Ballim is an Emeritus Professor in the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg in South Africa. He spent six years in the construction industry and has been a Civil Engineering academic since 1989. He has served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice Principal at the University of the Witwatersrand and as the founding Vice-Chancellor of the Sol Plaatje University in Kimberley, South Africa. He is a Senior Member of RILEM and an Honorary Fellow of the South African Institution of Civil Engineering.

This shows how to predict time-temperature profiles in large concrete elements, resulting from the heat generated by the hydration of cement during the early stages of concrete construction. It sets out the evolution and flow of heat with finite-difference modelling, together with a number of case-studies.
