Eli Ginzberg is director, Conservation of Human Resources, and A. Barton Hepburn Professor Emeritus of Economics, Columbia University. He is the author of numerous books on manpower economics and related subjects, including Understanding Human Resources: Perspectives, People and Policy (1985), and coauthor of From Health Dollars to Health Services: New York City 1965-1985 (1986) and Beyond Human Scale: The Large Corporation at Risk (1985). Thierry J. Noyelle is senior research scholar, Conservation of Human Resources, Columbia University. He is the author of several books, including Beyond Industrial Dualism: Market and Job Segmentation in the New Economy (Westview, forthcoming) and coauthor of Services/ The New Economy (1981) and The Economic Transformation of American Cities (1984). Thomas M. Stanback, Jr., is adjunct senior research scholar, Conservation of Human Resources, Columbia University, and professor of economics, New York University. He is the author of several books, including Understanding the Service Economy (1979), and coauthor of Services/The New Economy

This volume is the first of four publications that will present the research on technology and employment carried out by Conservation of Human Resources of Columbia University over the past several years. This research was started with a small grant from the Rockefeller Foundation in 1982.
