Teaching Heart: My Life from Native Boarding School Survivor to Education Leader: American Indian Lives

Autor Ramona Charette Klein, Matthew Villeneuve
en Limba Engleză Paperback – apr 2027
In 1954 Ramona Charette left her family home at Turtle Mountain in North Dakota when she was sent to the federal institution known as the Fort Totten Indian School. Over the next four years, she would endure hunger, isolation, and other violations that would haunt her for years to come. But her life story is not simply how she became a boarding school survivor, though that would be plenty; it’s about how she became a boarding school conqueror. After Fort Totten, Ramona turned to schooling as a tool for empowerment and healing. Her journey from boarding school to a doctorate in education proves that Native people can learn—and have some important things to teach as well.
Teaching Heart is the life story of an Indigenous woman who has worked to braid together Indigenous ways of teaching and learning with American education to make good on the power and promise of school for all children. Today Ramona’s mission is to promote boarding school truth and healing while celebrating the brilliance of Indigenous people. Her story offers an unparalleled view into the struggles and triumphs of those dedicated to the dignity of teaching from the heart.

Recenzii

“Ramona Charette Klein has used her experiences as a boarding school survivor, as an educator, and as a community leader to help so many of us to reckon with this cruel boarding school past. She continues to speak so others can heal. This tragic era of our country’s history must be acknowledged, in all its sad and ugly words, so that the burden of that trauma can be lifted from the hearts of our relatives. Charette Klein uses her deep understanding of this past and of human resilience to help us all know that we are not alone. You must read this book, because our history is also yours.”—Deb Haaland, former secretary of the U.S. Department of Interior

“With courage, honesty, and grace, Ramona Charette Klein shares her journey from a seven-year-old Native child taken from her family and placed in a Federal Indian Boarding School to a woman whose voice helps illuminate a long-silenced truth in American history. Her story is a testament to survival, resilience, and the enduring dignity of Native people. This book is essential reading for anyone committed to truth, understanding, and healing.”—Deborah Parker, vice chair of Tulalip Tribes and former CEO of the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition
