A tamarind tree: and the steady, unfaltering love of a grandmother. Women with resistance woven into the very sinews of their bones. And the land that bore them: unrepentant, strong as old roots. A land as old as time, marred by political instability and ravaged by loss and the scars of its colonial past. And yet, deep in ancient sands, seeds of hope are sprouting, like flowers from the concrete, like a love song. Laila is a girl of fifteen, trapped in the shadow of a wealthy suitor fifty years her senior, and with no way out except an escape to the capital city Khartoum.
When she arrives, she is caught in clandestine affairs: a politically charged writing workshop, ran by activists and the crackdown on dissent by Al-Bashir's authoritarian regime. She finds herself in a whirlwind of events through no real fault of her own, culminating in the revolution which toppled a dictator. Her blood pulsating like the heart of a hero, she is finally free: but at what cost? A lyrical tale of poetry, rebellion and the electric cry of a country, 'Tamrahindi' is set to rewrite narratives of oppression and channel the spirit of a nation at war.
