Recenzii
'Swamp', when applied to music, is one of those know-it-when-you-hear-it things, like art and porn, and people have used that word to mean so many different things. Michael Elliott digs deep and devises a specific definition that includes rock and blues, country and R&B, groove and humidity. Tracing swamp rock's origins down to Louisiana in the 1950s and all the way up to the present-day Americana scene, he's penned a fascinating alternative history of rock 'n' roll, full of weirdos and crooks and geniuses who collaborated on some of the most ebullient music made in America. He tells their stories with joy and curiosity and outrage, which makes him a fine guide through these winding backroads and lost bayous.
For me, the essence of creativity has always been the making of connections, and in Swamp Rock: At the Crossroads of Blues, Funk, Country, and Soul, Michael Elliott travels so many roads through the landscapes of traditional and popular music, especially in the American South, that, like Jerry Lee Lewis, he'll likely leave you breathless. As someone who's known and documented many of the far-flung artists he discusses-from Dale Hawkins to Rod Bernard, Junior Kimbrough, and Marcia Ball-I'm impressed by his insights, convinced by his arguments, and delighted by his stories of American music at its most diverse and influential. Highly recommended!
Great music books draw connections, offer fresh insight, and can take forever to get through, as they send us to listen to the recordings cited by the author. Michael Elliot has written just such a book, chronicling decades of intersections of some of my favorite music.
In Swamp Rock, Michael Elliott ties together the threads of a musical genre that many of us know and love without ever quite being able to define. An admirable work of historical journalism that is as much fun as it is informative. Dig in!
