Sunny Side Up is a humorous and heartwarming tale of Kush, a mischievous Punjabi boy growing up in the vibrant town of Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, during the 1980s and 1990s. Born into the Kartar Niwas household, Kush's journey is filled with pranks, laughter, and unforgettable adventures. As the youngest of three siblings, he navigates life with his bubbly sister Bano, his studious elder brother Preet, and a lively cast of neighbors like the ever-watchful Aunty Reshma.
From celebrating festivals with unrestrained enthusiasm-whether it's bursting firecrackers on Diwali or flying kites on Holi-to forming deep bonds with friends like Rocky, Kaala, and Kulla, Kush's life is an entertaining mix of mischief and emotion. He's not much for school but has a knack for breaking toys and household gadgets out of sheer curiosity, much to his family's frustration and amusement.
The book also weaves in the cultural fabric of the time, with references to iconic cricket matches, 1990s Hindi pop, and Punjabi songs. It paints a vivid picture of Kush's teenage years, his love for gol gappe at Gol Bazaar, and his playful yet innocent relationship with Punnu, a girl who visits his neighborhood during summer vacations.
As Kush transitions into adulthood, the narrative shifts to his aspirations of moving to Canada, inspired by his sister's life abroad. Through all the hilarity, warmth, and poignant moments, the story captures the essence of growing up in a small town-where every lane holds a memory and every face tells a story.
Sunny Side Up is a delightful celebration of family, friendship, and the bittersweet nostalgia of childhood, setting the stage for the next chapter in Kush's life as he embarks on a new adventure in Canada.
