Styles of Memory: Film and the Mnemonic Imagination

Autor Fred Rush
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 16 feb 2027
Styles of Memory offers a rich philosophical investigation into cinema's unique power to enlist viewers in the imaginative construction of experience. Drawing on close readings of three major works by Terrence Malick, Andrei Tarkovsky, and Krzysztof Kieslowski, this book explores how film can do philosophical work-how images and sounds, in their unfolding, probe the existential conditions of memory, imagination, and the self.At the center of the book is the claim that film does not merely depict memory but stages forms of remembering, imagining, and dreaming within its very fabric. In The Tree of Life, Malick crafts images endowed with striking sentient agency that are, to different degrees, autonomous enough from character point-of-view to seem as if they are "looks without lookers." The film reveals and, at the same time, questions how fiction invites our imaginative investment by making an interior gaze visible. Tarkovsky's Nostalghia overlays the world of dream and memory upon the world of present experience, creating a shifting visual field in which nostalgia shows itself as atmosphere: ambiguous, permeating, and disorienting. Time, place, and memory braid in their constant contest with the desire for home, rest, and eternity. By contrast, Kieslowski's Blue exposes the cost of rejecting the past, memory, and the psychic wounds they carry, tracking memory's subtle, insistent demand to be heard even in that rejection.Across these films, Fred Rush argues, we witness cinema reflecting on the very processes that shape the narrative of a life. The interactions between imagination and memory-how each structures experience, collaborates with other modes of making the absent present, and contributes to the formation of the self-emerges not through theoretical exposition but through the films' formal precision and meditative storytelling, or how these films "do the philosophy."
