Frances, a 1950s housewife, lives a stultifying life with her indifferent husband and distant teenage son. In an effort to fight the boredom of suburban life she enrols in a class at the local community college. When she meets Blake, a butch lesbian, her life completely changes. She in thrall to a forbidden world of martini lunches, late nights at queer bars and a sexual passion she never knew was possible.
