Staying Alive in Bear Country

Autor Peter Crow
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 30 iul 2026
Sometimes the greatest adventure is simply refusing to surrender your wonder.
At twenty-one, Old Joe Grady makes an unconventional life choice-he will "stay alive until he dies"-not just surviving, but maintaining wonder, curiosity, and authentic engagement with every day he's given. In his decades-spanning journey through the American South and beyond, Joe deliberately chooses challenging, unfamiliar experiences over the comfortable routines that deaden the spirit.
From a legendary encounter with a black bear in the Great Smoky Mountains to corporate battles against dehumanization, from saving a wild river to confronting his family's slave-owning past, Joe's quest takes him through the changing landscape of American life.
Along the way, he forms deep friendships with fellow seekers-a Korean War veteran struggling with trauma, a woman running an underground network of dignity and resistance, and a childhood sweetheart with whom he finds unexpected love in his seventies.
With humor, heart, and unflinching honesty, Staying Alive in Bear Country examines friendship, love, mortality, and the courage required to stay truly alive in an often challenging world.

Notă biografică

Peter Crow grew up in a 1940s-50s North Carolina cotton mill town and began telling stories about a guy named Old Joe Grady to distract youngsters at a 1960s summer camp from the rigor of climbing steep mountain trails. Those tales grew over time, becoming the basis of Staying Alive in Bear Country. After moving to Raleigh, North Carolina, with his wife Beth, Crow spent seven years participating in the Honduras Health Mission, an outreach ministry of his Episcopal Church. Crow was an active member of the North Carolina Writers' Network and a moderator with Braver Discussions, a national depolarization organization. Less than a month after learning his manuscript would be published, Peter Crow passed away.
