Star Memories

Autor Umar Thamrin Traducere de Yuni Utami Asih
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 10 noi 2026
In the world of Sulawesi, the sea and stars guide destinies, and the tides of history shape the lives of ordinary people. Star Memories is a sweeping, multigenerational novel that follows Punggawa, a commoner-turned-guerilla-leader, and his son, Wellang, as they navigate the storms of colonial oppression, war, and revolution from the 1930s to the 1960s. Against the backdrop of Dutch and Japanese occupation, political upheaval, and the struggle for Indonesian independence, their journey is interwoven with the wisdom and traditions of the Bajo and Bugis sea peoples-masters of celestial navigation and keepers of ancient beliefs.
As Punggawa and his companions fight for dignity and survival, they are caught between loyalty to their ancestors and the demands of an ever-changing world. Through rebellion, exile, and the search for a decent life, their stories reveal the resilience of a community bound by the ocean, the stars, and the hope for a better future. Rich in indigenous lore, oral storytelling, and the rhythms of island life, this is a luminous tale of courage, loss, and the enduring power of memory. Discover a hidden chapter of Indonesian history, where every star has a story, and every journey begins with a longing for home.

Notă biografică

Umar Thamrin is a native of Sulawesi. He works as a lecturer at the Faculty of Letters and Humanities, a prominent academic division focused on linguistics, cultural heritage, and literature, and in the Postgraduate Program at Universitas Islam Negeri Alauddin Makassar. He teaches English Literature and Linguistics at the undergraduate level and Philosophy of Science at the postgraduate level. Thamrin completed his undergraduate degree in English Language Teaching at the Institut Agama Islam Negeri Alauddin, then received a master's degree in English Language and Literature at the Hasanuddin University in Makassar. He received a Fulbright scholarship for a master's degree in Religious Studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He then received a Catherine and William L. Magistretti Graduate Fellowship to pursue a doctorate in South and Southeast Asian Studies with a designated emphasis in Critical Theory, at the University of California, Berkeley. While studying in the United States, he also taught undergraduate courses in religious studies, reading, and writing. Finally, before returning to Indonesia, he served as a research and teaching fellow at the University of Oregon. Thamrin is a member of the American National Honor Society: Theta Alpha Kappa. Having spent twelve years in the U.S. made him aware of the importance of preserving Sulawesi culture as a part of his identity and that of his nation. He conducted his research in Sulawesi, as well as in the Netherlands. This prompted him to recall Sulawesi's forgotten history and feel compelled to write about Sulawesi's culture and indigenous language, currently obscured by economic and political issues. Before he grew interested in producing literary works, Thamrin wrote academic papers. His first short story, "Cenning Rara," was published on Dalang Publishing's website in 2022. In the same year, it was included in the short-story collection Footprints/Tapak Tilas. He voluntarily translated six short stories for Dalang Publishing, four of which were also published in Footprints/Tapak Tilas. Star Memories is Thamrin's first novel. Translator, Yuni Utami Asih, spends most of her time in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Her journey into the world of letters began in childhood, with a constant supply of children's magazines and storybooks from her father. This gave her the early foundation of a lifelong curiosity that led her to the intricate world of fiction. She is particularly fond of detective stories and allegorical tales. Asih's professional path blends her love for language with her commitment to education. She began to teach English while pursuing her bachelor's degree in the English Education Study Program at Mulawarman University in Samarinda. Having gained experience at various schools, she returned to her alma mater in 2005, where she currently lectures on Applied Linguistics at the Faculty of Teacher Training & Education. Her devotion to academic excellence led her to pursue a master's degree in English Language Education at the State University of Surabaya. In 2011, she received a Sandwich scholarship from the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture. This allowed her to deepen her doctoral research on the phonology of the Kenyah language, indigenous to Kalimantan, at Leiden University, Netherlands. Since completing her doctorate at the State University of Surabaya in 2016, Asih has dedicated her time to teaching. She serves as a facilitator for numerous local and national teacher-training programs, and publishes academic papers in Applied Linguistics and English Language Education. Currently, she is focused on community development within her home region, particularly in Sepaku, the emerging site of Indonesia's new capital. Alongside her team, Asih has spent the past two years helping local headmasters refine their managerial skills. She has also worked with teachers to develop books on local languages, art, culture, and natural resources for high school students in East Kalimantan. Asih's debut as a literary translator began with voluntarily translating six short stories for Dalang Publishing, which led to the novel-length translation of Pasola (Dalang Publishing, 2023). Destiny and Stars, the translation of Membilang Bintang, is her second full-length translation for Dalang. To bring this novel to American readers was a profoundly personal and challenging endeavor that required a skillful adaptation of a specific Indonesian historical and cultural setting. Translating Star Memories was more than a technical exercise; it was an adventure across eras, traditions, and dialects.
