Sounding Out brings brings together work from the environmental humanities, Black Studies, Indigenous Studies, and sound studies to develop an exploratory ecology of sound, clarifying the weaponization of sound against Black and Indigenous people but also how thinking with sound can help build a more sustainable and equitable world.
Across three chapters the book responds to the simultaneous overflowing of resistance and mobilization against the asphyxiating conditions of settler-colonial and anti-black violence in a global context. Attuning to insurgent geographies of indigenous and Black resistance from Lagos to Land Back movements we listen with the transfigurative sounds of Inuit throat singers, dubstep-powwow, Black techno, experimental electronica and more, tapping into the speculative contours of the "sonic undercommons", through which struggle makes itself heard.
