Some Nightmares Are Real: The Haunting Truth Behind Alabama’s Supernatural Tales

Autor Kelly Kazek Ilustrat de Sarah Cotton
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 6 aug 2024 – vârsta până la 75 ani
Southern writer and folklorist Kelly Kazek’s collection of eerie and enigmatic Alabama ghost stories
Dark secrets lurk beneath the sleepy surface of Alabama. Ghosts and grisly creatures haunt the towns and forests. In the great Southern ghost-story tradition, famed Alabama storyteller Kelly Kazek weaves a gothic tapestry of ten stories drawn from real people and legendary creatures, cursed places, and harrowing events.
Each story or legend takes readers to a different place in Alabama. Read about the bestial Wolf Woman who terrified Mobilians in the haunted old port city. In the northern city of Huntsville, visit the Dead Children’s Playground in gloomy Maple Hill Cemetery. In Jacksonville, feel the cold grip of the Old Mill Witch, rumored to protect the workers at the rickety cotton yarn mill. Hear about the mysterious green light that drifts along the Alabama River in the Black Belt hamlet of Gee’s Bend and learn about the role the Gee’s Bend Ferry played in the Civil Rights Movement.
Unlike most ghost-story collections, Some Nightmares Are Real includes an appendix of facts, historical resources, and information about how to visit the locations. These contemporary stories embrace a beloved Southern folkloric tradition for a new generation of young readers. The tales will terrify and ensnare ghost-story lovers of all ages. So settle in, pull the covers up tight, and maybe turn on the light, because the truth is: Some Nightmares Are Real.

“The natural environment, speech, and culture in Some Nightmares Are Real reflect an Alabama world that will captivate young readers.”
—Emily Blejwas, author of The Story of Alabama in Fourteen Foods and executive director of the Alabama Folklife Association

“It is a great idea to combine historical Alabama events with fictious tales illustrating them. . . . Children are always drawn to scary stories and its always a plus when they can learn a little something in the process.”
—Watt Key, author of Bay Boy: Stories of a Childhood in Point Clear, Alabama and Alabama Moon

“It may be strange to say that this beautifully illustrated collection of ghost stories fills me with such a longing for my home state, but it does. Alabama’s history, its legends, and supernatural happenings are blended here in a fresh, compelling fashion that readers both young and old will enjoy. These spine-chillers captivated me from the first sentence to the last, and I’m now eager to visit many of these haunted places with my family because of their rich cultural significance, and fascinating history. Kazek has created a worthy addition to Alabama folklore.”
—Han Nolan, author of Running Past Dark and Dancing on the Edge (winner of a National Book Award)

"Kazek’s love for Alabama’s ghost legends permeates the book. Readers who are not lovers of ghost stories when they open the cover of Some Nightmares Are Real will likely become converts by the time they finish the book. Historically minded readers of any age will appreciate the book’s value as a supplement to the state’s historical record. Kazek’s inspiration for the book, Kathryn Tucker Windham, would definitely approve of her use of the state’s lesser-known supernatural tales to help keep Alabama’s ghost lore alive."
—Alabama Writers' Forum
“Although each story is based on actual people and places from the author's home state of Alabama, the tales are also embroidered with fictional characters and storylines that make them fit for telling on dark and stormy nights. Artist Sarah Cotton enriches each chapter with her haunting black-and-white illustrations, flawlessly capturing the unearthly beings that populate each legend.”
The Southeastern Librarian
“Kazek offers 10 stories in locations from Huntsville to Mobile in her book, but she doesn't tell them as straightforward ghost tales. She weaves stories that mix fictional characters and their experience with these events,”
—The Decatur Daily
