Solvent Interaction Analysis: Physical Chemistry and Analytical Applications of Aqueous Two-Phase Systems

Autor Boris Y. Zaslavsky, Vladimir N. Uversky
en Limba Engleză Paperback – mai 2027
Solvent Interaction Analysis: Physical Chemistry and Analytical Applications of Aqueous Two-Phase Systems explores Solvent Interaction Analysis (SIA) technology, a cutting-edge approach for protein characterization and proteomics in biological fluids. The book considers a broad spectrum of topics, from fundamental principles such as phase separation, blood-tissue distribution, and posttranslational protein modifications, to advanced clinical applications for early detection of various malignancies, neurological disorders, and other diseases. The book opens with an introduction to aqueous two-phase system (ATPS), considering different types of ATPS, hydrophobic and electrostatic properties, and mechanisms of liquid-liquid phase separation, before moving on to specific properties of phases such as solute-water interaction and blood-tissue distribution, and analysis of partitioning individual proteins. It then explores solvent interaction analysis, investigating diagnostic applications and biomarker discovery. Final chapters explore fundamental consequences of ATPS-based analysis and its future opportunities. This comprehensive guide offers a detailed overview of aqueous two-phase systems from foundational knowledge to the latest developments in the field, and is an essential reference for students, researchers and practitioners across a wide range of disciplines, including biophysics, analytical and medicinal chemistry, proteomics, structural biology, pharmaceutical science, and biotechnology.

  • Explores real-world biomedical applications of aqueous two-phase systems, focusing on biomarker discovery and disease detection
  • Offers an interdisciplinary approach to solvent interaction analysis, integrating biophysics and physical chemistry
  • Investigates mechanisms of phase separation and its applications in biological and clinical contexts
  • Bridges foundational knowledge with advanced practical insights to enhance understanding

Notă biografică

Dr. Boris Y. Zaslavsky graduated from Moscow State University as a bioanalytical chemist in 1967. He worked at the USSR Academy of Sciences, received a Ph.D. degree in 1974, and Dr.Sci. degree in 1986. He left the USSR for the USA in 1991 to take up a visiting scholar position at Cornell Medical College in New York City. He worked at KV Pharmaceuticals and Argonne National Laboratory. In 1996 Dr. Zaslavsky cofounded Analiza, Inc. and Cleveland Diagnostics, Inc. in 2013. He pioneered analytical applications of extractions in aqueous two-phase systems and the development of Solvent Interaction Analysis for quality control of biopharmaceuticals, and clinical testing for early detection of various malignancies. He has authored more than 170 research papers and reviews and one book, "Aqueous Two-Phase Partitioning: Physical Chemistry and Bioanalytical Applications?.
