"So you're Getting Engaged " takes a very contemporary and humorous look at engagement and finds it wildly out of date. The author proposes an expansion of engagement from the present limitation of one woman and one man to a 'multiple' engagement of up to five persons, whether composed of a combination of the sexes, or of the same sex. Also proposed is a new idea: a warm-up period of 'pre-engagement, ' with its own customs, ceremony and rules. Lord discusses the two different kinds of engagement, identifies a new kind of engagement ceremony, evaluates present-day engagement traditions, explains how to make announcements in the media, and the appropriate ways to celebrate. He also encourages the use of a new kind of planner. He discusses the protocol for 'disengaging, ' and discusses the reasons for and the advantages of 'faux engagements.' He ends by taking a highly original view of where 'multiple' engagements could lead.
