Sir John Denham's role in the development of the English heroic couplet has long been recognized -- most notably in his poem Cooper's Hill. Rather less well know is his play The Sophy, published in the same year (1642) as the more famous poem. F.E. Schelling called it "a noble and pathetic play; and one of the best of its immediate time."
