Learn to read more than 100 essential Chinese characters with lessons that build your vocabulary one character at a time and include more than 1,710 practice sentences and phrases.
The characters in this book were selected to expose you to a variety of grammar patterns and common words. Your lessons begin with the simplest character 一 (one), then 人 (person) and 个 (generic-noun-type marker). With these characters you can read the phrase 一个人。(One person). The fourth character is 女 (woman, female), which allows you to read 一个女人。 (One woman). The fifth character is 子 (son, child) which can be combined with 女 to form the sixth character 好 (good). Given those you can read simple sentences like the following:
一个好。 (One is good.)
一个好人。 (A good person.)
一个人好。 (A person is good.)
一个好女人。 (A good woman.)

And so on. In order to help you learn to decompose and recognize characters, the stroke order, traditional (long) form if any, meaning, and components of each new character are introduced first. The lessons also contain activities to help you remember characters and vocabulary through periodic repetition, as well as reading comprehension exercises.
When you finish this book you will know a little more than 28 percent of the characters you will encounter in any given text on average.
