P.Herc. 1780 stands out as a real puzzle among the Ercolaneum papyri. It is fragmentary, tricky, with scattered words that do not help understand what text it is about. We find mentions of Epicurus and his school (the Kepos, i.e. “the Garden”), but no references to his philosophy: instead, together with the names of some of the Master's pupils and of unknown people, we find references to testaments as well as to everyday life, for instance to monetary affairs. Our new edition offers for the first time the complete transcription of all readable material, together with an introduction and a commentary suggesting a new interpretation of this enigmatic text.

Tra i papiri ercolanesi, P.Herc. 1780 si fa notare come un vero e proprio rompicapo. È frammentario, problematico, fatto di parole sparse che non aiutano a capire di quale testo si tratti. Troviamo menzioni di Epicuro e della sua scuola (il Kepos, o “Giardino”), ma nessun riferimento alla sua filosofia: insieme ai nomi di alcuni allievi del Maestro e di persone sconosciute, leggiamo solo riferimenti a testamenti e cose di tutti i giorni; per esempio, questioni economiche. La nostra nuova edizione offre per la prima volta la trascrizione completa di tutto il materiale leggibile, insieme a un'introduzione e a un commento che propongono una nuova interpretazione di questo testo in larga parte ancora misterioso.
