Raymond Grew is Professor of History, University of Michigan. He is editor of the journal Comparative Studies in Society and History and past president of the Society for Italian Historical Studies. Among other works he is editor, with Nicholas Steneck, of Society and History: Essays by Sylvia Thrupp, also published by the University of Michigan Press.Patrick J. Harrigan is Professor of History, University of Waterloo. He is author of The Making of Frenchmen and Mobility, Elites and Education in French Society of the Second Empire.
