Saint Pope John Paul II was one of the most beloved leaders of the Catholic Church. He was born in Poland in 1920 and his real name was Karol Wojtyla. As a young man, he loved sports, acting in plays, and spending time outdoors. But he also had a deep love for God, which led him to become a priest.
In 1978, Karol was elected Pope and took the name John Paul II. He became the first Pope from Poland and one of the youngest in history! As Pope, he traveled more than any other Pope before him, visiting many countries to meet people, share God's love, and encourage peace.
John Paul II cared deeply about young people, even starting World Youth Day, where young Catholics from all over the world gather to pray and celebrate their faith. He also taught people about the importance of forgiveness, family, and protecting the dignity of every person.
Even when he grew old and sick, John Paul II showed great strength and faith. He loved Jesus and trusted in God until the very end. He was declared a saint in 2014, and today, we remember him as someone who loved God and helped others know God's love too.
St. Pope John Paul II begins with the birth of Karol Wojtyla near Krakow, Poland and covers several significant events in his life prior to his election as Pope in 1978. Children will also learn about the many important contributions he made, and significant events that happened during his papacy.
