"A fascinatingly intricate post-apocalyptic future." - Kirkus Reviews
She wakes nameless and uncertain into a changed world.
The Miracle that toppled the corporate empire of NED was meant to usher in a new era of coexistence between humanity and A.I. Instead, its absence has left the world a wasteland - a scrap heap called the Deposit, where survivors and scavengers pick through the wreckage of the past for an unknown future. Among them is a woman with no name and no memory.
She slept through the Singularity. She does not yet understand what that makes her.
Now a greater power has come - an advanced alien civilization that has not come to rebuild the world, but to decide whether it should exist at all. As it renders its verdict on who counts as a person and who does not, the answer may rest with the one anomalous woman who was not accounted for.
RESONANCE is the sequel to REMANENCE, winner of the Nautilus Gold Award for Science Fiction. It returns to the world the Miracle broke open and presses on the question beneath it: when a self can outlast a body, when the dead can still speak, when a machine can love in ways that are not love but not nothing - who gets to decide what's human?
For readers of literary science fiction that lingers - a haunting, propulsive meditation on memory, grief, personhood, and what survives when everything else is lost.
PRAISE FOR RESONANCE
"The author's densely detailed world offers plenty of action and suspense, and Vaughn is particularly adept at establishing an ominous atmosphere . . . Elena and Standard emerge as compelling characters." - Kirkus Reviews
"The worldbuilding, characterization, and big ideas are bold and inventive, and Vaughn often finds cool, shivery jolts of awareness and recognition as human and machine slide into each other." - BookLife Reviews
