Reshaping Russia: Power, Economics and Statecraft: Adelphi series
Autor Nigel Gould-Daviesen Limba Engleză Paperback – 25 noi 2026
It also marks the latest in a long series of Western attempts to shape Russia’s capabilities and intentions by controlling its access to economic flows – from early Cold War isolation, through Ostpolitik, détente and post-communist integration, to the return of isolation.
Reshaping Russia is the first study to trace this long arc of Western strategy. Drawing on archives, interviews and the author’s policy experience, it shows what worked, what failed and why, and what each era reveals about the uses and limits of economic power. It concludes with wider lessons, far beyond Russia, for a world in which ‘adversary economic statecraft has come of age’.

‘Nigel Gould-Davies has written the definitive account of Western economic statecraft toward the Soviet Union and Russia. Combining mastery of the complicated details of this economic history with clear, lively prose, Reshaping Russia provides a comprehensive and fair assessment of what tools of economic statecraft have and have not worked, especially in the latest, more confrontational era after Russia’s full-scale invasion. There are many lessons here for policymakers, academics, and students, not only for how to craft economic statecraft toward Russia but also toward China. Reshaping Russia will become an instant classic in this field, setting a high bar for future scholars.’
Michael McFaul, author of Autocrats vs. Democrats: China, Russia, America, and the New Global Disorder; former US ambassador to Russia
‘Nigel Gould-Davies gives an incisive and thought-provoking analysis of the West’s economic statecraft towards Moscow, from the Stalin era through to the present day. He draws striking and policy-relevant conclusions about what worked – sometimes more than we thought at the time – and where mistakes were made. The book is a must-read for those thinking about how to manage relations with Russia once the bitter Ukraine war finally comes to an end.’
Sir John Sawers, Executive Chairman, Newbridge Advisory; former chief, Secret Intelligence Service (UK)
‘Gould-Davies offers an illuminating deep dive into the chequered and complex history of Western sanctions on Russia. His analysis of how Western sanctions have made it harder for Russia to secure a military victory against Ukraine is particularly cogent and compelling, as is his blistering critique of the strategic costs of applying economic incentives and coercion in an adversarial relationship without a clear, consistent, and unified approach. This book is an exceptional and important addition to the field of economic statecraft.’
Fiona Hill, Senior Fellow, The Brookings Institution; former deputy assistant to the president and senior director for European and Russian affairs, National Security Council (US)
‘Nigel Gould-Davies describes with great intellectual depth and passion why Russia has become a renewed rival of the West, and how to deal with this rivalry. A must-read for everyone seeking intellectual and conceptual clarity on what to do next, which will require political stamina and a strategic vision. One of my favourite points – why being a big country does not guarantee victory in the twenty-first century – is one we still have to prove.’
Pavlo Klimkin, former minister of foreign affairs of Ukraine; Non-resident Senior Fellow, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace
‘Crystal-clear exposition; pithy but deep analysis; and an impressive survey of Western economic relations with Russia over the last half-century. All to address one of the pressing questions for our age: do sanctions work?’
Bridget Kendall, former master of Peterhouse, University of Cambridge; former diplomatic correspondent and Moscow correspondent, BBC
